Wood Construction
Preparation and Treatment
When selecting a sauna it is important to select the proper type of wood that will not only be a beautiful addition to your home, but also last for a very long time. The finish, longevity and aesthetic appeal of your sauna are all dictated by the type, quality and preparation of the chosen wood. The following will highlight some of the factors that you should consider when making a choice. It is important that the wood is correctly cured to avoid warping and splits when the sauna is heated and cooled. If the wood is not correctly dried before the sauna is manufactured, then over time this warping can lead to problems such as gaps or separation! All of Cabana Saunas, Far Infrared Saunas are kiln dried at the manufacturer. This ensures that the moisture content of the wood is within optimal standards and helps prevent any cracking, warping, or twisting during production. Our sauna’s are also double walled for longevity and durability.
Types of Wood
The most popular woods chosen for sauna construction are: fir, hemlock, cedar and basswood. Typically, these woods are chosen due to their excellent thermal properties and resistance to splitting when heated and cooled. A Cabana Sauna, Far Infrared Sauna is made of either high grade Hemlock or Red Cedar imported from Canada.
Assembly and Finishing
Wood grades vary and we carefully ensure that our cedar and hemlock wood is of the highest grade when imported. Each wooden sheets is classified according to the color and width, only qualified sheets are used in Cabana Sauna’s, Far Infrared Saunas. The color of cedar wood can vary between samples from the same tree. Therefore, during the production process a special wood-selection procedure guarantees that the wood used for any one sauna has a very close match. They must be free of knots and have no obvious color differences. The wood used in the Cabana Sauna’s, Far Infrared Saunas have been carefully selected resulting in a designer looking finish.
After the wood is carefully inspected, each sauna is then constructed together using waterbased, non toxic glues and then carefully pressed for 24 hours to ensure adequate adherance. All of Cabana Sauna’s, Far Infrared Saunas are constructed so that the wood is double walled, resulting in a well constructed, heavy duty sauna.
Once the sauna is constructed, it must then be sanded and finished to create a desginer look. The quality of the finished paintwork depends on how well the wood was sanded in the preparation stage. Each of our Cabana Sauna’s, Far Infrared Saunas go through 2 – 3 rounds of sanding and finishing to ensure a smooth finish.
